WHAT CAN I DO ??????????

Hey.... Now help me figure this out...
Monday,16th June was the last date for submission of the interim report. We had to give a description of what we had done till now and what we were supposed to do in the remaining five weeks of our internship period. Sounds fairly simple and routine...

But...

Nothing is simple, I guess, especially when it comes to me ... My intern is at a civil engineering firm and so even after five weeks I was not able to find myself a project decent enough to show at IIT. So, I came up with an exit strategy... that is where the word "Tentative" helped me out. I gave a tentative plan that I would end up going to Mumbai for a couple of weeks and then remaining internship will be at Kullu and that I would know about my project there on arrival. Nice... I said to myself, thinking that I was able to buy out some time.

Mild Shock ... My supervisor asks me to call him... I get confused because before that he was very cool and did not care much... So, why... all of a sudden... why does he want me to call him???? That thought was what kept on coming in mind for a few hours at least before I slept...
The next Morning I called him up and found out the reason ... He wanted to pay me a visit, just to check out the company..."Routine stuff"...he said. So, he said " Please let me know about 5-8 days in advance about when you will be leaving for Kullu, so that I can accordingly make my plan "
Hats off to him... I thought... going for a vacation in Kullu at IIT expenses... Brilliant....
But why would I care...

Time passed by ... I was not able to meet my company's CEO to confirm my plan ... So on 16th June, I submitted my "Tentative" report...

MAJOR SHOCK... Today... 18th June... DO OR DIE... I have to meet the CEO at all costs .... So, I spent a fortune on calls throughout the morning just to fix up a meeting... " He is in a meeting" ... " He is having lunch"... " he is busy"........and the list goes on ........This is what I got...
But "DO OR DIE" attitude more often than not gets the best out of you... So, I decided to barge into the office comewhat may ... 3 PM .... I reach there... And am made to sit in the waiting room... Time passes... finally after waiting for an hour, the great guy calls me in...

3 pm.... CEO's Office...

CEO: "How may I help you"
Me: " Sir, I need to give a confirmed plan to my supervisor as to what I will be doing in the remaining part of my internship. And, I was hoping to get a project in which I would give some 'technical insights' ... As that is what is required of us at IIT. "
CEO:" Ok. I understand. I have a perfect project for you ........................................" He went on and on about some slope stabilisation thing ... Completely civil... Nothing registered in my head...
He brags about the project.. 500MW something something.... 2000 Crore something something....4 crore something something... that s all I can remember....

Me: " Sir, is there anything for a mechanical engineer to do in this"
CEO ( Excited) : " YES ! Drilling... ........ ..... .... .. . ...... ....." And off he went.... something something.... America something something.... Switzerland something something....Power something something..... Colanco something something....Thats again as much as I could understand...

CEO: " OK. So you have a project. Anything else."
Me: " Yes sir, I thought you were going to send me to Kullu, So in my interim report I wrote about that and now my supervisor wants to visit me over there. "
CEO: " ASK YOUR SUPERVISOR TO VISIT HERE"
(silence... was amused and that was showing on my face)

CEO: " Ok. do you want to go to Kullu"
Me: "only if I can get a project over there, else I would prefer this slope one"
CEO: " Ok, then forget about his visit. From now on, I am your supervisor and YOU REPORT DIRECTLY TO ME and I will GIVE YOU ALL THE CERTIFICATION THAT YOU NEED AT IIT. Fine ? "

<
Flashback moment.....
In the report, we were also asked to submit the resume of our supervisor in the company and to whom we report... I, of course, did not have one.... So, I told the Chief Administrating officer CAO about this, and she said, get it from any mechanical engineer on site and that should suffice... So, I began my search for a mechanical engineer... Hard to believe but I had not come across many in the first four weeks of my intern... Finally, I met a guy named ' Rajeev Kumar Singh' and he was kind enough to give me his resume, although he did not have his visiting card but I thought resume is good enough for now... So I was able to find my training supervisor...

Got his resume... and his signature on my training certificate..YIPPEE... ONE PROBLEM SOLVED...I have a supervisor in the company....IIT cant do anything now...
>

(someone knocks on the door and I realize where I am)

CEO: "So, is it OK, Young Man ? "
Me: " YES SIR ! THANK YOU "... I said while leaving....

Now, Help me out... if only he would have met me a week before ( I had been trying to fix up a meeting with him for the past 2 weeks) ... It would have been a piece of cake for me... But... Now, after I have submitted the report and made everything official, suddenly, everything changes... My PIF form, Supervisor, Project, Project Location.... EVERYTHING !!!!
One more thing... the training coordinator at IIT ... He also is already psyched up at me for a disaster that happened in the last semester ( most of you would be knowing).... And now this... He would again have an opportunity to blast at me... pretty similar to what he did, when i went to submit the interim report, and yeah, at that time, he had no opportunity to do anything to me... But, this time around, the report and then what I did afterwards... That will surely be his pretext and I might again be left stranded in the middle of nowhere... Me and my smile... The same reaction I gave at the interim report submission... Just help me cover up my smile...

TRAINING AT UVW

Day 1…All set for another new experience… INDUSTRIAL n all … Seems to be fun … At least from the outside…

All ready at 9 am… Awaiting the call… Waiting to know the reporting place…And the lady calls at 1015 am

Me: Hello
Lady: Hi. Mr. XYZ is out of the station, I am trying to contact him and will let you know about the place most definitely by 1 pm..
Me: Yes Mam. Thank you.

Ok… cool… Chill… No work in the Morning…So I started reading a book … DECEPTION POINT…

A couple of hours into the book…. Interesting…I don’t want to go today for intern…As soon as the thought comes into my mind… The phone rings …L

Me: Hello
Lady: Hi. Just got off the phone with Mr. XYZ. He said that you can take a day off.
Me: Ok. But IIT wants us to join in from 12th May
Lady: We will still mention the date of joining as May 12. Is that ok
Me: Yes. That will be good.

Kiddin’ me … that’s the best thing:-D

Now, time for Dan Brown…J

Day 2:
Get a mail from the Lady … Report at Sarai Kale Khan … 9:30 am sharp
Alrite…I will be there

Meet the Sr. Gen. Mgr. Of the company… The mail read

9:30am : I have arrived

Now have to wait for the other guy to reach …comes the usual 15 mins late

Ok … So whr is the mgr ??? Should be here shortly says the receptionist … Please wait outside.

A couple of hours go by …then the receptionist comes out… “aap log chill maaro… saab kal aayenge… kal subah 10 baje aana”

Cool … another day .. Home… and Dan Brown is out again… becoming so very interesting

Day 3 :

Reach the trng at exactly 10 am.. Find my co-internee waiting !!!
The weather is good … pleasant .. maybe some rain round the corner…
.
.
A rain-storm is brewing… winds gushing past the office… Its bcmng increasingly dangerous in here …

The rain falling…getting heavier every second… we are trapped inside… feels like a hurricane or smthng out there …

After a few hours of waiting … rain finally stops… and …guess what … mangr nt cmng today as well … so another day to chill-out… J

Day 4:

Finally … we meet up with Mr. AS and he sends us to Sector 94 – Noida….
Says Leave now – reach there by 2 pm

Now… on way…we hit the Greater Noida Expressway… What a road…. Esp for a person who loves to drive … PARADISE, I must say… Boards fly by on the side

Sector 92 … sector 93 …sector 93 A…. we are getting close … J
Then… next board …sector 105… next one …sector 97…. Something isn’t right …
Newaz… we continue to drive on the paradise… zooming at 150 + J

After 15 mins… we enter GREATER NOIDA .. clearly … we have come wrong :-P

Now… Turn around…head back ….

See a police car at a distance … so we stop and ask him..

Me : Bhaiya, yeh sector 94 kahan padega ??

Police : Kunsa ????

Me: 94 ..94… chauranve…

Police : chiyaanve ???

Me : nahi nahi … chauranve …..94

Police : Chauranve… yahaan se ulti taraf .. yeh saamne purra hi chauranve hai … ulte-haath ghoom jaon …

Me : achcha … yahaan se udhar ghoomne ki turn kahan hogi ??

Police : yahaan se ulte haath ko ghoom jaon aur aage sadhak ulti ghoomegi ….

Me (puzzled … to take a U-turn … go left …. What’s goin on ???? ;-P ) : thik hai … dhanyvaad

But … as it turned out… the police guy was wrong… there were no turns ..

And .. just as we reached back to where we started…. We saw it /… Sector 94 !!!! and GIL written everywhere…. After driving for 60 kms ….

Newaz …. Finally … we made it … But the concerned person was not there…
His deputy gave us a set of 120+ drawings … told us to go thru them….they were of the various parts used to make the entire metro bridge …
So, we pretended to be studying them…. Our speed was incredible … we were through in about 30 minutes J

And then … we were off again…. Another BUSY day at work !!! ;-P

DAY 5 :
Finally…. The last day of the first week was here !!! It had been tuff…pretty busy … ;-P

Also, deception point was just awesome … and The Client was also becoming interesting… Decided to take The Client with me to work … And Boy-oh-boy… it was one of my better decisions !!!!

The plant manager was not there today as well … was running a bit late … deputy asked us to wait … and YES .. I struck gold… the book was out in no time J

Hours passed by … but there were no signs of the manager … finally at about 3 pm, the deputy asked us to put on our helmets and take a walk… look around the facility….His timing could not have been worse …. Firstly … the book … the thought of closing it was heart-braking.. Secondly.. the temperatures outside were soaring … 43 degree Celsius !!

But … we had to go anyway … had to show something in the weekly report… so we went on a round … and were back in 20 minutes…
The deputy almost yelled … and took us out again !!! ;-P

He personally explained everything … and took about an hour or so …
But finally our ordeal came to an end !!!

THE FIRST WEEK WAS FINALLY OVERRRRRRRRR ...PHEWWWWWW !!!…..very busy & tiring … ;-)

First Day at IIT DELHI

Yet another young boy steps into this great institution with great things in mind… high expectations…both from himself as well as the institute…hardly does he know what’s in store... ;-P
IIT: Indian Institute of Technology…One of the most prestigious colleges in the country…People work day in & out just to get into it … thinking life will be relatively simple afterwards … hardly knowing what awaits them …
First day… sees a professor… with eyes full of excitement… ready to gain something …

Computers CSL 102 lecture class… 8:00 am
Prof ( Smart, young guy with a nice accent comes in) :Good Morning Class… My name is SP… I will be taking your comp science course CSL 102… We will be learning SML…Now, I have some important work today, so this class will be re-scheduled later… See u all on Monday.. Bye … take care… n god bless

Students...Cheerful… happy that first class is over so quickly … today will be a good day to have fun ! Collectively, all head to WIND T… the most popular place on IIT Delhi Campus… )

Chemistry CYL 110 lecture class… 9:30 am

Prof (very young...) : Good Morning class...
Students ( in unison) : Good Morning Sir
Prof : Ahhh... I am here to take your course CYL 110 ... Ahhh... Its about Physical Chemistry ... My name is SD and I, along with Ms. CC will be taking this course..She is your course coordinator...My room no. is MS 777, so if you have any doubts... please feel free me to come to my room.... hmmmm... or better still.... write a mail to sd@chem.iitd.ac.in and I will get back to you... Is it clear ??

Students (A bit surprised by the intro) : YES SIR

Prof: OK, now I think all of you know about the Boyle’s law… As you all have studied P is directly proportional to V

(Students whisper… A sudden chaos … All we studied … all the basics were wrong…IIT is great…Now we will get to know the actual thing…)

Prof ( puzzled due to the whispering, looks back at the board ): Oh… SORRY SORRY… See…Its my first lecture today… it is a silly mistake… its P is inversely proportional to V

Students ( trying to control their laughter…) : Its OK Sir… ;-P…We understand… Please Continue…

Prof ( Still nervous….managing a wry smile..) : So, today we will cover all these basic laws like Boyles, Charles and all …
.
.
.
.
Time 11:05 am

Students : Sir … Class is till 10:55 am… Can we please leave …

Prof ( In a little angry tone) : Don’t try to trick me coz its my first day here… It’s a 2 hour class.. I know THAT for sure ..

But as usual, he was wrong… the next professor came in and said … Sir, the slot is of one and a half hours only ;-) :-)

This we thought was a one-off incident … But we were so badly mistaken !!!
That’s how it went…Kind of funny… Soon this became all too normal…Students becoming inert to all these, once hilarous things... The great excitement in their eyes was soon about to be replaced by TENSION, FRUSTRATION, DEPRESSION, BOREDOM, DULLNESS etc etc :-(

Newaz.... More about that later :-)
